The bicycle is a very useful piece of equipment. While some might use a bicycle because of health benefits or as a sport, it is also an important form of transportation. A bicycle is more accessible to many offering a cost-effective way to get to school, work, the doctor, the grocery store, etc. and doesn’t produce any air or greenhouse gas emissions. Using a bicycle for transportation whenever possible is one of many things we can do as to help us move towards becoming a net carbon neutral community by 2050.
In 2018, the United Nations General Assembly (UN) declared June 3 as World Bicycle Day to draw attention to the many benefits of using a bicycle. The UN welcomes national and local initiatives to strengthen physical and mental health and well-being and develop a culture of cycling.

- June is also Seniors’ Month. In 2018, the City of Burlington launched the Borrow-A-Bike Program for older adults during regular business hours, Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. year round, weather permitting. Two step-through bicycles and one three-wheeler bicycle are available for new and experienced cyclists. Baskets, horns, locks and helmets are also included in the free lending program.
- Rolling Horse, a non-profit bicycle shop, hosts many community outreach programs including mechanic training, youth drop-ins, community clinics, the Buddy Bike, and more. The Buddy Bike, which is loaned out at no cost, offers outdoor recreation and therapeutic activity to riders with cognitive or physical disabilities who might not be able to ride a bicycle safely on their own or have the strength to do so.
- You can combine your bike ride with a bus ride on Burlington Transit by using the bike racks on the bus. Check out this video first so that you know how to use them.
- Businesses registered with the Welcome Cyclist Network offer secure bike racks, shelters, cycling maps and a bike repair kit for emergency use.
Coming soon
- A bicycle repair station and an EV charging station will be coming near the BurlingtonGreen EcoHub. Stay tuned to the Take Action Burlington blog or BurlingtonGreen’s webpage for additional details.
