Emergency Preparedness Week 2025: Be Prepared for Every Season

Emergency Preparedness Week is May 4–10, 2025. Emergencies can occur in any season, and being prepared helps ensure your safety, as well as the safety of your loved ones and neighbours.

Steps to Prepare for Any Emergency

Create a Step-by-Step Emergency Plan

  • Involve your entire family in the planning process. Regularly update your plan, and make sure everyone knows what to do in the event of an emergency. Consider scenarios like snowstorms, power outages, floods, high winds, or extreme heat.
  • Receive advanced notice of weather events.
    • Conservation Halton offers a free email service to let you know when they issue flood and low water messages. Subscribe to stay informed.
    • Follow the City of Burlington’s social media channels to receive timely information during emergency events.

Prepare Emergency Kits

Have a kit ready with essential items:

  • A battery-powered radio
  • Flashlights and extra batteries
  • A week’s worth of medications for family members and pets
  • Non-perishable food (3-day supply) and manual can opener. Replace once a year.

Strengthen Social Connections

Get to know your neighbours, especially those who may need extra assistance during an emergency. Share emergency contact information, and plan to check in on each other during and after a disaster.

When you prepare for all seasons and build a strong network, you’re not only ensuring your family’s safety, but also helping build a more resilient community.
