Our everyday choices as to how we move from one place to another, where we live, and how we heat our homes add up and has a huge impact on our community carbon emissions and our finances. Check out some of the initiatives happening in February that can help you become a bit more active this winter, and more aware of energy conservation and commuting options.
Winter Walk Day – Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2025

If you have school-aged children at home, bundle everyone up on Feb. 5 and walk or wheel to school. If there aren’t any school-aged children at home, celebrate the season and enjoy some time outdoors. We don’t need to hibernate just because it’s winter. Check out some tips posted in last year’s blog post titled, Celebrate Winter Walk Day: You’re Closer Than You Think!
National Sweater Day – Thursday, Feb. 6, 2025

Founded by World Wildlife Fund Canada, National Sweater Day has been celebrated since 2010 on the first Thursday of February to raise awareness about climate change and energy conservation. Wear a sweater and turn down the heat by 1.5 or 2 degrees Celsius. Similar in concept to Earth Hour, this is not just about celebrating an hour or a day but about taking the first step to making a longer-term commitment to energy conservation and reduced use of fossil fuels, which contribute to climate change.
Winter Commute Month – Feb. 1 to 28, 2025

For most employees who work outside the home, walking to work is not an option. Smart Commute Halton Municipalities is offering workplaces a free one-year program with tools and resources to encourage workers to get to work in a sustainable way such as carpooling, public transit, biking or walking.
Log your sustainable trips taken between Feb. 1 and 28, 2025 on hm.SmartCommute.ca by March 7, 2025, for your chance to win a $50 gift card. You can upload up to two commutes per day for the contest. A prize will be drawn in March or April. If you won, you will be notified by email.
