October 16 is World Food Day and in celebration, we are profiling our community gardens.

Are you interested in growing your own local food? Do you live in Burlington and don’t have space to plant a garden? The City of Burlington has a solution that might work for you. From experienced gardeners to beginners, anyone over 18 years of age can apply to rent a ground-based or raised accessible plot in one of the City’s five community gardens. Please note that demand for these garden plots is very high so anyone wanting a spot will have to apply and be entered into a lottery.

How do I get started?

Choose from one of the City’s five community garden locations: Amherst Park, Central Park, Francis Road Trail, Ireland Park or Maple Park.

Complete an application through your Live and Play account and submit it by Dec. 15, 2023. Step by step registration instructions are available at burlington.ca/communitygardens.

If you are selected, you must:

  • Agree to the garden rules and visitor guidelines
  • Pay the fee (about $65 with taxes) for the season which runs between May 1 and Oct. 31, 2024. If eligible, financial assistance to register for this program is available.

How can my community group create a new community garden?

There are a number of options listed at burlington.ca/communitygardens including the City’s Neighbourhood Community Matching Fund which provides up to $10,000 in matching funds.

Connection to climate change

Growing your own food will reduce emissions associated with mass food production, processing and distribution.
