We’ve improved our Principles and Objectives of Sustainable Development … What do you think?

Did you know that in 1990, the City of Burlington declared itself a Sustainable Development Community and created the Sustainable Development Committee (SDC), a volunteer citizen advisory committee to City Council? In 2015, the SDC celebrated their 25th anniversary with past and present members in honour of their accomplishments.

The SDC have been using the Principles and Objectives of Sustainable Development (POSD) since they were written in the early 90s. The committee decided it was time to update them and after spending a year reviewing them, preparing drafts and consulting with city staff, they are ready to share them with you.

Please take a look at the final draft and let us know what you think. The updated Principles and Objectives are on the SDC webpage along with a short three question survey we’d like you to complete.

History of the Principles and Objectives of Sustainable Development

The SDC developed the original POSD in 1990 and then updated them in 1994, when they were approved by city council. In 2008, they were appended to the city’s Official Plan.

The POSD are important as they help to guide the committee during their work, including:

  • Discussions and debates related to sustainable development;
  • Research and writing of the State of the Environment Report (5 editions);
  • Review of planning applications, strategic plans and policy documents; and
  • Community engagement activities.

Next Steps

The SDC will review the survey responses, finalize the POSD, and present them to city council. They will also be included as an appendix to the new Official Plan, Grow Bold.

What can you do?

Take Action Burlington! Please provide your input to the Principles and Objectives of Sustainable Development.

  1. 1. Its hard to reply by March 3 when you receive the blog notice on March 6th.

    2. Where do I find these new POSD? As a former DFC member and Chair, I would be most interested in reading them.
