Burlington Transit is going green! On March 9, 2026, two new hybrid-electric buses hit the road to service Routes 80 & 81.

How Does a Hybrid Bus Work?
The new hybrid-electric buses feature a small diesel engine, a battery system and an electric motor to drive the wheels. The motor is powered by both its batteries and the engine so the engine is about half the size of a regular bus’s diesel engine. This will help reduce Burlington Transit’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Investing in Our Fleet and Our City
Over the course of the year, we will see eight more hybrid-electric busses join the Burlington Transit fleet, bringing the grand total to 10. The addition of these buses was made possible by a combined investment of nearly $17 million from federal and provincial governments for several initiatives, including improved and greener public transit. The hybrid buses will replace aging vehicles with cleaner models.
Public transit investments in Burlington supports the Burlington Transit 5-Year Business Plan, Green Fleet Strategy, Integrated Mobility Plan and Burlington Climate Plan. It also helps the City reach its goal of being a net carbon neutral community by 2050, while supporting a growing population and connecting the community.
Take Action Burlington! Leave the car at home and take a ride on one of our new hybrid-electric buses. Collectively we can make a difference.
