Sign up for Alert Burlington, the City’s public notification system for community emergencies

Emergency preparedness starts with you. Make a plan for every season. Includes 4 icons to represent each season.

While winter weather is behind us, spring and summer pose their own seasonal threats. If you live or work in Burlington, the City of Burlington is encouraging you to subscribe to Alert Burlington, a free public notification system for large-scale emergencies. There’s no better time to do so than during Emergency Preparedness Week which runs the first full week of May from May 5 to 11, 2024.

Severe flooding, large hazardous materials releases and explosions are all examples of occasions where an alert may be used to inform the public if there are threats to life safety.

Thankfully there has not been a need to release an alert through the platform since it first launched in 2022. However, the August 2014 flood is an example where the Alert Burlington system would have been used to communicate in a timely manner, including providing direction to those  in the affected area to evacuate or shelter-in-place.

“In emergencies, every second counts. In the event of a large-scale emergency that threatens life safety, Alert Burlington notifications will be sent to subscribers, so that they are aware of the hazard and what protective actions they should take to stay safe”, explains Robyn Heibert, Community Emergency Management Specialist at the City of Burlington.
