Did you know that this week is Waste Reduction Week (WRW) in Canada? To celebrate, this month’s blog posts are dedicated to actions you can take to keep your ‘stuff’ out of the landfill. Check out my last post if you missed it about how to recycle child car and booster seats.
Now that the cooler weather is here, perhaps you are thinking about decluttering your basement. I know I am! If you still have VHS, Beta and DV tapes, floppies, CDs, DVDs and vinyl, read on… Unless you’re a crafter who uses old CDs as coasters or for artwork, these items often end up in the landfill. Red Propeller, a social impact recycling company, has an alternative solution through Project Get ReelTM.
Project Get ReelTM staff separate recyclable parts from VHS tapes and other media by hand. For a small fee, you can help keep these items out of the landfill. Bonus: they employ people with social, physical or mental barriers.
What can I do?
- Visit redpropeller.ca/getreel
- Drop off or mail the items to Red Propeller at 116 Industry St., Toronto.
- Pay for your shipment online (costs generally range from $0.20 to $0.50 per item). Print the order confirmation and include it with your boxed package.

I am aware of Red Propeller, but driving into Toronto is not an option and mailing the many VCR tapes that I have would be extremely expensive. Is there any possibility that a one-day collection site could be set up in Burlington ? Thanks. Marilyn Ortwein

Marilyn, at this point I am not aware of such an event. However, after my post about car seats, Red Propeller told me that they were hoping to find a local store to host an event. Stay tuned.
